Event Notes

For the last seven years, we have been fortunate enough o engage hundreds of students in our Spotlight program.  Under usual circumstances, we present a fun musical that usually ties in with the StoryBook Season.  This year, due to COVID19 we have made the choice to bring a play, without singing to our SPOTLIGHT program.

ONCE UPON A CRIME - The Trial of Goldilocks
by Flip Kobler & Cindy Marcus

Will justice be served in this hilarious fairy-tale courtroom play packed with characters we all know and love?  It’s up to your audience, which serves as the jury and determines how the play ends!  Goldilocks is the defendant, on trial for breaking and entering.  The plaintiffs are — you guessed it — the three bears.  As their lawyers Henny Penny and Tom Thumb go toe-to-toe hoping to prove their respective clients’ cases, other fairy tale characters are called to testify as witnesses, including Hansel and Gretel, Jack and Cow, and Granny.  Even the Big Bad Wolf takes the stand, but can any of these witnesses be trusted themselves?  Is Goldilocks guilty or innocent?  With multiple endings to cover each possible outcome, your audience gets to decide her ultimate fate.

During this eight-week program, students will be put through all the parts of the production process including auditions, casting, training, rehearsals and performance.  This is a SKILL-BASED program with a focus on character and acting development.
Casting for the performance will be decided by the production/teaching team after the students complete skills testing and audition preparation.

Students will meet for regular rehearsals.  Masks must be worn for the duration of the rehearsal process.  StoryBook is still working with Alberta Health Services to determine the potential for the final class to be presented without masks in a film or theatre cohort format.

Prior to the first date of classes, a comprehensive document on how StoryBook will keep students safe will be provided.  You can learn more about our current standard rehearsal processes HERE.  The theatre school process will be much of the same with modifications for our theatre school students.

Our final production will be presented online for families to enjoy.  The students will present the production live in-person and together.  Once the final presentation is complete the students will watch the production streamed to their families together
